How to Get Parts 3D Printed: A Guide to Contract 3D Printing in Youngstown, Ohio
By 3 Boyz Printz · October 4, 2026
Maybe you've designed a part and need it made. Maybe something broke and the replacement isn't sold anywhere. Or maybe you have a product idea and need a few dozen units to test the market. In all of these cases, you don't need to buy a 3D printer and learn to run it. You can hire a print shop to do it for you. That's called contract 3D printing, and it's what we do every day on our own products.
This guide explains how it works, how to pick the right material, and what to send so you get a fast, accurate quote.
What is contract 3D printing?
Contract 3D printing means a print shop produces parts for you from your design, or helps create the design first. You tell us what you need, we quote it, and once you approve, we print your parts. You get finished parts without the cost of equipment, materials or the trial-and-error of dialing in a printer.
When does it make sense?
- Prototypes: test the fit, form and function of a design before investing in molds or large production.
- Replacement parts: knobs, clips, brackets, covers and other small parts that are discontinued or hard to find.
- Small-batch production: runs of tens or hundreds of parts, where injection molding would be too expensive to set up.
- Custom products: one-of-a-kind items, personalized gifts, or branded pieces for a club, team or business.
- Product launches: make a first batch to sell or test before committing to a big order.
Choosing a material: PLA vs. PETG vs. ABS
Most everyday parts are printed in one of three plastics. Each has its strengths:
| Material | Best for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| PLA | Prototypes, display pieces, models and everyday indoor parts. Prints crisp detail and comes in the widest range of colors. | Lower heat resistance. It can soften in a hot car or in direct summer sun. |
| PETG | Functional parts that need to be tougher and less brittle, and that may face moisture or moderate heat. | Slightly less crisp fine detail than PLA. |
| ABS | Strong, heat-resistant parts, like vehicle interior pieces and tools that see real use. | Best for parts where heat and impact resistance matter more than fine surface finish. |
Not sure which to choose? Just tell us how the part will be used: indoors or outdoors, how hot it gets, and how much force it takes. We'll recommend a material. We're also open to other materials for the right project.
What to send us for a quote
The more we know, the faster and more accurate your quote will be. Here's what helps:
- A 3D file, if you have one: STL, 3MF or STEP files all work.
- No file? No problem: send a sketch, a drawing with measurements, or photos of the part you want to copy or replace. We can model simple designs in Autodesk Fusion.
- Quantity: one part, ten, or a few hundred.
- Material and color preferences, if you have them.
- How it will be used, so we can recommend the right material.
- When you need it.
You can attach a file right on our quote request form, or email us for larger files.
How our process works
- Send us your project. A file, sketch, photo or description, plus quantity and timeline.
- Get a quote. We review it and reply with pricing and timing, or questions if we need more detail.
- We print. Once you approve, we print your parts. For bigger runs, we can do a sample first.
- You get your parts. We'll work out delivery with you.
Why work with 3 Boyz Printz?
- Real production capacity. We run a fleet of 11 Bambu Lab printers (P1S, X1C, P2S, H2S and H2D models), so we can handle batch orders, not just one-offs.
- We make our own products, too. Our hitch covers, precision-fit battery cases and fishing tools are designed and printed in our shop and sold on Amazon and in our other online stores. We know what it takes to make parts that hold up to everyday use.
- Your designs stay yours. Files you send us are used only to quote and complete your project. We don't share, sell or reuse your designs. See our privacy policy.
- A family business near you. We're a dad and his three sons in Austintown, Ohio, just outside Youngstown, and we treat every project like it's our own.
